How to Elect a Pope

As we join the Church in praying for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, we are also beginning to pray for the election of a new Pope. New popes aren’t elected often, making each conclave a moment of intense excitement, anticipation, and deep spiritual significance. But how exactly does the Catholic Church choose the next pope?

In the video below, Fr. Mike Schmitz breaks down the entire papal election process, from the secretive conclave at the Vatican to the moment we see white smoke from the Sistine Chapel.

How to Elect a Pope (Papal Conclave Explained) (7:50)

In times of great need and spiritual battle, the Church turns to prayer. As we look upon this solemn moment, in which the Chair of Peter stands vacant once more, we place our trust in God’s providence and pray fervently for the election of a pope who is holy, courageous, and faithful to the unchanging teachings of Christ and His Church.

Prayer for the Election of a Holy and Faithful Pope

O God, Eternal Shepherd, Who govern Your flock with unfailing care, Grant in Your boundless fatherly love a pastor for Your Church who will please You by His holiness and to us show watchful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
