Catechism – Paragraph #459

What did Jesus mean by the way, truth, and life?

Catechism Meditation:

The Word became flesh to be our model of holiness: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.” “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.”  No. 459

REFLECTION.  At first, the early Church was referred to as “The Way.” This was before Jesus’ followers started to be called Christians. Therefore, “the way” is a significant metaphor for Christ. Jesus is the way to heaven where the Father reigns.

Truth is an important theme in the Gospel of John. Earlier Jesus said to his disciples, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (Jn 8:32). The truth will set us free from slavery to sin. Jesus is the Word of God and understanding the truth of his life and teachings will free us from sin. Therefore, as his disciples we should seek to understand the truth through study of Scriptures and spiritual works.

Life is another important theme in the Gospel of John. Jesus is the path to eternal life. The Son is the way to the Father. With the Father we have everlasting life. Free from sin, we find unity with God.

PRAYER.  Gracious Lord, keep my thoughts and actions contrary to anything that might tarnish this sacred bond with You, as I strive for holiness in Your image.

Timeless Wisdom Quote:

“To do God’s Will until death, that is the inner heart of all holiness.” Venerable Fulton J. Sheen
