Does God care what we wear to Mass?
Catechism Meditation:
“To prepare for worthy reception of this sacrament, the faithful should observe the fast required in their Church. Bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing) ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest.” ―No. 1387
REFLECTION. One hour before receiving the Most Holy Eucharist, a person is to abstain from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine. The one hour fast before receiving Holy Communion creates a physical hunger and thirst for the Lord, which in turn augments the spiritual hunger and thirst we ought to have.
Proper attire is also essential during a Catholic Mass to show respect and reverence for the sacred space and the act of worship. In his blog, Does God Care What We Wear to Mass, Fr. Chad King writes… “Everywhere we go, whomever we are meeting, we dress for the occasion. Who goes to a job interview, or to meet the President, wearing shorts and sandals? If you’ve ever been to Rome and the Vatican, you know shorts are not allowed to be worn inside St. Peter’s. Why? Our Lord Jesus Christ present in the Holy Eucharist deserves our reverence of body and soul. Showing respect for Whom we encounter and receive at Mass, should be made both interiorly and exteriorly, for one affects the other.”
It is true that Jesus will accept us in whatever clothing we are wearing, but if we deliberately choose what we wear, it can remind us to also prepare our hearts. It can be tempting to simply show up at Mass and never think about what we are about to partake in. The Church provides guidance on preparation, behavior, and participation to ensure the Mass is a holy encounter with Christ. Fasting, modest dress, and active participation are key practices rooted in Catholic tradition and respect for God’s presence.
PRAYER. Lord Jesus, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the gift of the Eucharist. Grant us the grace to participate fully in the Mass, embracing each moment with reverence and love.
Timeless Wisdom Quote:
“The Church demands a certain amount of fasting before Communion. This is to remind us that the Eucharist is not only a sacrament of life, but also the sacrament of mortification. Only when we are stamped with the sign of the Cross will we be stamped with the glory of His Resurrection.” ― Venerable Fulton J. Sheen
