What is the role of the laity?

“The term ‘laity’ is here understood to mean all the faithful except those in Holy Orders and those who belong to a religious state approved by the Church. That is, the faithful, who by Baptism are incorporated into Christ and integrated into the People of God, are made sharers in their particular way in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of Christ, and have their own part to play in the mission of the whole Christian people in the Church and in the World.” ―No. 897
REFLECTION. Laity is a term that applies to the non-ordained members of the Body of Christ. Lay women and men are those individuals at work in the world, transforming society towards the image of Christ Jesus. In fact, “lay people, too, sharing in the priestly, prophetical and kingly office of Christ, play their part in the mission of the whole people of God in the Church and in the World,” according to the Second Vatican Council in Apostolicam Actuositatem (The Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity), no. 2, 1965. (USCCB).
Through Baptism, laypeople are called to offer their lives as a spiritual sacrifice, to live in communion with Christ, and to witness His love in every corner of the world. This witness is expressed through words but also through concrete actions that reflect Gospel values: justice, solidarity, peace, and respect for the dignity of every person.
Today, laypeople face unique challenges. We live in a pluralistic and often secularized world, where religious beliefs can be marginalized or misunderstood. Yet this context also offers an extraordinary opportunity: laypeople can act as bridges between the Church and the world, bringing the light of Christ to places where clergy and religious may not always reach. For example, laypeople are present in workplaces, where they can promote ethics, justice, and human dignity. In the family, they are primary evangelizers of their children, passing on the faith from generation to generation. In politics, they can be agents of change, defending Christian values and promoting policies that respect life, religious freedom, and the common good.
Today, more than ever, the world needs Christian laypeople who live their faith authentically and become agents of change in their communities. Whether parents, professionals, social leaders, or friends, laypeople have the power to transform society by reflecting Christ’s love in all they do.
