Should Catholics avoid watching secular movies?
Catechism Meditation:
Christian purity requires a purification of the social climate. It requires of the communications media that their presentations show concern for respect and restraint. Purity of heart brings freedom from widespread eroticism and avoids entertainment inclined to voyeurism and illusion. ―No. 2525
REFLECTION: Movies have been one of the most popular forms of media that have been accessible in the past century. Whether in a theater or on the comfort of one’s couch, films provide an immersive escape into worlds both real and imagined. The impact of watching movies can be therapeutic, fun, inspiring, or relaxing, and they offer a unique form of entertainment. However, as Catholics, we should always be careful what we expose ourselves to. After all, our hearts and our minds are fragile and can be easily swayed in a subtle way. Secular movies can introduce us to characters and behaviors that may negatively impact our character and choices. They can influence culture, emotions, technology, and even social change. Depending on what we see and listen to, the way we think and act can change in small ways for the good or for the bad over time.
When we say “secular movies,” we’re referring to films that are not made by or for Christians and that don’t necessarily promote biblical values. Think Marvel movies, romantic comedies, thrillers, or indie dramas that explore human stories but don’t mention God. Some may include profanity, sexual content, violence, or worldviews that don’t align with Scripture. Others may be clean but still considered “secular” because they focus on worldly themes. Whether we notice or not, movies shape how we see the world. They can stir compassion or normalize sin. Repeated exposure to content that mocks God, glorifies sin, or celebrates rebellion slowly shifts our spiritual sensitivity. This doesn’t mean we avoid all secular content, but we must guard our eyes and be honest about how media affects our spirit. Not all secular content’s promote sinful behaviors and acts, but some can really influence or impact our faith negatively. If entertainment takes up too much of our time or leads us away from prayer and worship, it can become an idol. At this point if not immediately checked can equally become an addiction.
So, is it OK for Catholics to watch secular movies? It depends on the movie, your maturity, and your heart posture. Secular movies can entertain and spark conversation, and they can also leave audiences thinking about what behaviors are celebrated or brushed aside. To avoid overexposing yourself to secular movies take time to think about the content you are about to consume and how it aligns with your values and beliefs. Ask yourself these questions before watching a movie… Does this glorify sin or celebrate evil? Will it help or hinder my walk with God? Is this feeding my flesh or my spirit? Ultimately, when considering any movie, we should always put Christ in our minds and our hearts first. Entertainment options may be a constant in our lives, but it is our responsibility to make sure what we choose to engage in is healthy for us in both body and soul and is in line with our Catholic values.
PRAYER. Dear Lord, we seek Your guidance in the realm of entertainment, that it may be a source of encouragement and inspiration. May creators be filled with Your wisdom to share uplifting messages that resonate with hearts and uplift spirits. Let their work shine light in the darkness, fostering hope and joy in all who encounter it.
