Why should we honor St. Gianna Beretta Molla?
Catechism Meditation:
Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being. ―No. 2258
REFLECTION: In a world where stories of courage and sacrifice can often feel distant or out of reach, one name stands out as a beacon of hope, faith, and the ultimate selflessness: Gianna Beretta Molla. Her extraordinary life, defined by an unwavering commitment to both her family and the sanctity of life, has made her an inspirational figure. Revered not only for her professional accomplishments but also for the ultimate sacrifice she made as a mother, Gianna’s story continues to resonate with those who believe in the dignity of life from conception to natural death.
Gianna Beretta Molla was born in 1922 in Magenta, Italy, into a devout Catholic family. From a young age, Gianna exhibited a strong sense of service, compassion, and faith. She became a pediatrician, dedicated to helping children and supporting families in need. She was also deeply involved in her parish and Catholic organizations, constantly striving to live out her faith through acts of kindness and service to others. Gianna’s commitment to her faith and her role as a medical professional made her a role model in her community.
In 1961, during the second month of her fourth pregnancy, Gianna Beretta Molla was diagnosed with a fibroma on her uterus. After examination, the doctors presented her with three options: an abortion, a complete hysterectomy, or the removal of the fibroma while attempting to preserve the pregnancy.
Gianna, deeply committed to the sanctity of life, chose to have the fibroma removed, but not undergo the complete hysterectomy the doctors recommended, that would have killed her unborn child. Prioritizing the life of her unborn child over her own health, she firmly told her doctors that her child’s life was more important than hers.
On Holy Saturday, April 21, 1962, Gianna underwent a Caesarean section and gave birth to a healthy daughter, Gianna Emanuela. However, Gianna’s condition remained critical. She suffered severe pain and, just a week later, tragically passed away from septic peritonitis on Easter Saturday, April 28, 1962.
Gianna’s husband later penned a biography of her life in 1971, which he dedicated to their children. He often reminded Gianna Emanuela that her mother’s decision was made out of conscience—both as a loving mother and a compassionate doctor.
Her daughter, Gianna Emanuela, survived and went on to become not only a doctor specializing in geriatrics, but also an advocate for the pro-life cause, continuing her mother’s legacy.
Gianna Molla’s decision to choose life at the cost of her own health—and ultimately her life—is a profound example of self-sacrifice. In a world where abortion is often seen as a quick solution, Gianna’s story reminds us of the sanctity of every life, no matter how fragile. Her actions embody the pro-life values of putting others first, standing firm in one’s beliefs, and valuing all life from conception to death.
As Gianna once said, “Love and sacrifice are as intimately connected as sun and light. We cannot love without suffering or suffer without loving. Look how many sacrifices are made by mothers who truly love their children. They are ready for everything, even to give their own blood. Did not Jesus die on the Cross for us, out of love for us? Love is affirmed and confirmed with the blood of sacrifice.”
In 2004, Gianna Beretta Molla was canonized as a saint, honoring her faith, virtue, and legacy as a pro-life champion. Her example continues to inspire people worldwide to choose life, defend its sanctity, and act with courage in crisis.
Her canonization also highlighted the importance of maternal and child health, emphasizing care for both in difficult medical situations. Gianna’s life reminds us that sometimes the most heroic act is choosing life, even at great personal cost.
Gianna Molla’s legacy lives on in the many people whose lives have been touched by her story. Her life is a testament to the power of faith, love, and the profound dignity of human life. For those in the pro-life movement, Gianna is a living example of what it means to stand firm in one’s beliefs, to choose life over convenience, and to make a difference even in the most challenging of circumstances.
PRAYER. O Father, we humbly come before You, seeking the intercession of St. Gianna Beretta Molla. May her unwavering faith and love for family inspire us to live selflessly and bravely in our daily lives. Help us to defend life and to live the faith with generosity. St. Gianna Beretta Molla, pray for us!
Timeless Wisdom Quote:
