Should Catholics be patriotic and love their country?
Catechism Meditation:
It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. The love and service of one’s country follow from the duty of gratitude and belong to the order of charity. Submission to legitimate authorities and service of the common good require citizens to fulfill their roles in the life of the political community. ―No. 2239
REFLECTION. Catholics should be patriotic, as it is considered a duty rooted in gratitude and charity towards one’s country, according to the teachings of the Catholic Church. This patriotism is seen as a virtue that involves honoring and serving the common good of society. Catholic teaching emphasizes an order of charity: God first, then family, then homeland, and finally all humanity. This means that while Catholics can and should love their country, this love must not become idolatrous or place the nation above moral and spiritual obligations. Nationalism, which absolutizes the nation and excludes or diminishes others, is incompatible with Catholic faith because Christ’s salvation is universal.
Patriotism is considered a form of piety, reflecting gratitude and loyalty to the country that provides the social and cultural framework for life. Catholics are encouraged to be patriotic, but this patriotism is measured, moral, and oriented toward service, never replacing or contradicting their ultimate allegiance to God and the Church. Catholics must contribute to the common good, obey legitimate authorities, and work for justice, solidarity, and freedom within their nation. This includes recognizing the nation’s virtues and flaws, educating oneself about its history, and striving to improve society in accordance with Gospel values.
On the 4th of July, Catholics are encouraged to reflect on their faith and the spiritual freedom it brings, while also participating in community activities and prayers for the nation. Independence Day is a special time for us to reflect on our freedom and the blessings we have in the United States. As Catholics, we can use this day to deepen our faith and think about how we can serve others. We can pray for our country and its leaders. We can also pray for peace and justice in our nation. Community events on Independence Day allow Catholics to come together, celebrate their nation’s freedom, and show their patriotism and unity.
PRAYER. Lord, we thank You for the freedom we enjoy. Help us to remember the sacrifices made for our liberty. Guide our leaders and protect those who serve our country. May we share our blessings and work for peace and justice. Amen.
Timeless Wisdom Quote:
“Patriotism is a form of piety and there are three principle forms of piety, love of God, love of neighbor, and love of country. All three are grounded in justice.” ― Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
