What is the reason to be Catholic?
Catechism Meditation:
The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church’s life, for in it Christ associates his Church and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once and for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his body, which is the Church. ―No. 1407
REFLECTION: The Eucharist is our number one reason for being Catholic. We believe the Eucharist is Jesus. We take seriously Jesus’ words in the Gospel of John: “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink” (Jn 6:54-55). We follow Jesus’ command at the Last Supper to celebrate the Eucharist: “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me” (Lk 22:19). Jesus’ sacrifice, His self-gift on the cross, continues to be made present in the celebration of the Mass, where through the Eucharist we receive Jesus himself and are brought into union with God and communion with one another.
The Eucharist is not merely a ritual; it is the heart of the Catholic faith. It represents a profound mystery that connects believers to Christ’s sacrifice and presence. Through the Eucharist, Catholics experience the real presence of Jesus in a tangible way, allowing us to encounter God in our everyday lives. At the Last Supper, Jesus transforms the Passover meal into the Eucharist, establishing a new covenant. This sacrifice is not merely a remembrance; it is a re-presentation of His one eternal sacrifice on the Cross. By participating in the Eucharist, we enter into this mystery of salvation, receiving the grace necessary for our spiritual journey.
Understanding the Eucharist in Scripture is crucial for grasping the depth of our faith. It is a profound mystery that invites us into communion with Christ, transforming our lives and empowering us to be His witnesses in the world. As we reflect on the biblical foundations of the Eucharist, let us embrace this gift with open hearts.
PRAYER. Lord, help me to see the beauty of the Eucharist in my life. Open my heart to Your presence and guide me to live as You taught us.
Timeless Wisdom Quote:
