Why does the priest kiss the altar at Mass?
Catechism Meditation:
The altar, around which the Church is gathered in the celebration of the Eucharist, represents the two aspects of the same mystery: the altar of the sacrifice and the table of the Lord. This is all the more so since the Christian altar is the symbol of Christ himself, present in the midst of the assembly of his faithful, both as the victim offered for our reconciliation and as food from heaven who is giving himself to us. “For what is the altar of Christ if not the image of the Body of Christ?” asks St. Ambrose. He says elsewhere, “The altar represents the body [of Christ] and the Body of Christ is on the altar.” ―No. 1383
REFLECTION. In Catholic liturgy, the altar holds immense significance as the focal point of the Mass. It is not simply a table or platform where the priest celebrates the Eucharist, but rather a sacred space where heaven meets earth. The altar symbolizes Christ himself, who is both the priest and the sacrificial victim in the Eucharist. It serves as a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and his ongoing presence in the Eucharist, making it the most sacred and revered object in the Catholic liturgy. When observing a Mass, one may notice that a priest will often lean over and kiss the altar before proceeding with the service. This gesture may seem simple, but it holds deep symbolic meaning within the Catholic faith.
Throughout history, the act of priests kissing the altar has been a common tradition in many religious ceremonies. This ancient tradition dates back to the early days of Christianity and is rooted in rich symbolism and tradition. Priests kiss it as a sign of reverence and respect for the sacred space where the sacrifice of the Mass takes place. This act is a way of acknowledging the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and showing devotion to the mystery of the Eucharistic sacrifice. By kissing the altar, the priest is also expressing his humility and submission to God’s will. Some believe that priests also kiss the altar as a way of renewing their commitment to their vocation and to God. It serves as a reminder of their sacred duty to serve the faithful and to lead them in worship.
Next time you witness a priest kissing the altar, remember the spiritual significance behind this gesture. It serves as a powerful reminder of the sacredness of the Mass and the divine presence among us.
PRAYER. Lord, grant me the grace to approach the altar with reverence, recognizing the great sacrifice that was made for my salvation. May I receive the Eucharist with a spirit of awe and gratitude, aware of the profound intimacy it signifies.
Timeless Wisdom Quote:
“And so in the Catholic Church the altar, and not the pulpit or the choir or the organ, is the center of worship, for there is re-enacted the memorial of His Passion.” ― Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
