What is Church teaching on abortion?
Catechism Meditation:
Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law: You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish. God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes. ―No. 2271
REFLECTION: As Catholics, we affirm the scientific reality that physical life begins at the very moment of conception, and that a spiritual life begins at that moment, as well. Therefore, the Church recognizes the gravity of the decision to end a human life, but the Church does not end its conversation there. Healing is possible. God’s ocean of mercy is immense and bottomless. The Church calls all who suffer from the burden of abortion to run to the loving arms of Christ – Who is Mercy. There is no sin that is too great for God’s mercy, and the Church opens the doors of mercy and hope to those who have experienced this great trauma and suffering. If you or anyone you know is suffering after abortion, confidential, non-judgmental help is available. You are worthy of God’s love and forgiveness.
The pro-life commitment of the Church is reflected in her compassion for those who so often regret having had an abortion, her understanding for those who are facing difficult decisions, and her assistance for all who choose life. People who have been involved with an abortion are encouraged to get in touch with the Project Rachel Ministry and other ministries that enable them to seek the mercy of God in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and to obtain the necessary counseling. Pro-life ministries work with expectant mothers who are considering abortion by encouraging them to choose life for their children. They also provide alternatives to abortion through prenatal care, assistance in raising children, and adoption placement services.
PRAYER. Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of love for the precious gift of life. We pray for all unborn children, that they may be protected and cherished from the very moment of their conception.
Timeless Wisdom Quote:
“Love is reciprocal. It involves persons. And love also involves responsibility. The principal reason why there is abortion today is women are saying, ‘Well, I don’t want to have myself disturbed. I don’t want to care. I want no burden. I want to do whatever I please. I want to love myself.’ This is their philosophy.” ― Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
