Why should you know Jesus?

REFLECTION: In his book, Rediscovering Catholicism, Matthew Kelly writes: Jesus lived a life on this earth. He ate, he drank and he walked down the street. Do you know him as a person? Or in your heart and mind, is he just a historical figure, a legend, or perhaps a myth? We must move beyond the façade of the story of Jesus Christ. We must allow his Spirit to flood the thoughts, words, and actions of our daily lives. In order to do all of this we must come to know the Gospels intimately.
St. Jerome once wrote, “Ignorance of the Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” The great tragedy in the modern environment is that people know more about their favorite music group or sports players than they do about Jesus Christ. Read the Gospels. Never let a day pass without pondering a few of the precious words in those four books. Don’t just race through them. Read them slowly. Then re-read it and ponder those words. Allow the words of the Gospels to erode your personal prejudices, to wash away your narrow-mindedness, to banish your judgmental tendencies. You don’t have to read five chapters a day, just a small passage. But allow the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, alive and present in the Gospels, to sink their roots deep into your life.
PRAYER. Holy Spirit, open my heart to the truth of the gospel. Lead me to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Help me to walk in the light of Your truth, and guide me in sharing Your love with others.
