Why should you know Jesus?
Catechism Meditation:
“The Word of God, which is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, is set forth and displays its power in a most wonderful way in the writings of the New Testament” which hand on the ultimate truth of God’s Revelation. Their central object is Jesus Christ, God’s incarnate Son: his acts, teachings, Passion and glorification, and his Church’s beginnings under the Spirit’s guidance. ―No. 124
REFLECTION. In his book, Rediscovering Catholicism, Matthew Kelly writes: Jesus lived a life on this earth. He ate, he drank and he walked down the street. Do you know him as a person? Or in your heart and mind, is he just a historical figure, a legend, or perhaps a myth? We must move beyond the façade of the story of Jesus Christ. We must allow his Spirit to flood the thoughts, words, and actions of our daily lives. In order to do all of this we must come to know the Gospels intimately.
St. Jerome once wrote, “Ignorance of the Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” The great tragedy in the modern environment is that people know more about their favorite music group or sports players than they do about Jesus Christ. Read the Gospels. Never let a day pass without pondering a few of the precious words in those four books. Don’t just race through them. Read them slowly. Then re-read it and ponder those words. Allow the words of the Gospels to erode your personal prejudices, to wash away your narrow-mindedness, to banish your judgmental tendencies. You don’t have to read five chapters a day, just a small passage. But allow the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, alive and present in the Gospels, to sink their roots deep into your life.
PRAYER. Holy Spirit, open my heart to the truth of the gospel. Lead me to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Help me to walk in the light of Your truth, and guide me in sharing Your love with others.
Timeless Wisdom Quote:
“Pray to the Holy Spirit that you may know Christ in the fullness of His gospel and the love of the Father that you may understand He is the source of power, the Holy Spirit.” ― Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
